Eastern UP
Fall Color Scenic Drive — Eastern UP
Tahquamenon River corridor → Les Cheneaux islands → Mackinac Bridge — the eastern UP in full October color.
The eastern Upper Peninsula turns in sequence from north to south through October — sugar maple on the ridgelines first, then beech in the river valleys, then the coastal birch and aspen as the lake moderates the last color. This route times the drive to catch all three, from Tahquamenon's amber water corridor through Les Cheneaux's cut islands to the Mackinac Bridge panorama on the way out.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Tahquamenon Falls State Park
Start of the color corridor. The beech-maple stands between the Upper and Lower Falls hit peak color in the second week of October. The North Country Trail section along the river is the best walk in the UP for fall foliage — 4 miles, flat, amber water below orange canopy.
Overnight StopState park campground reservations through Michigan DNR — October weekends book 6 months out. Hipcamp has private sites near Paradise as overflow.
View Campgrounds →M-123 Drive — Newberry to Paradise
🚗 ~0.6hr drive from previous stop
30-mile state highway through Luce County beech-maple forest with almost no development. Stop at the Tahquamenon Country rest area pullouts for tree canopy photos. Best in mid-morning light when the frost has burned off.
Les Cheneaux Islands — Fall Color from the Water
🚗 ~2.0hr drive from previous stop
The 36 cut islands of Les Cheneaux hold color later than anywhere else in the UP — Lake Michigan moderates the temperature. A kayak or canoe tour through the channels in mid-October is one of the more underrated fall color experiences in the Midwest.
Overnight StopSmall private campgrounds on Cedarville and Hessel available via Hipcamp. Book early — limited inventory.
View Campgrounds →Hessel to Cedarville Channel Drive
M-129 between Hessel and Cedarville skirts the channel edge with island views. Stop at the Hessel marina for the broadest view across the Les Cheneaux channel. Afternoon light is best — the low October sun hits the birch canopy at a low angle.
Sault Ste. Marie — Mission Hill Overlook
🚗 ~0.8hr drive from previous stop
Mission Hill Road above the city gives the broadest view of the St. Marys River, the Soo Locks, and the Ontario shore in fall color. The sugar maples on the hill itself usually peak October 5-12.
Brevoort Lake — US-2 Aspen Corridor
🚗 ~0.5hr drive from previous stop
US-2 between St. Ignace and Naubinway skirts Brevoort Lake and runs through aspen and birch stands that hold color into late October. The lake reflection in flat morning light is worth an early start.
Mackinac Bridge — Panoramic Finale
🚗 ~0.5hr drive from previous stop
If you're heading south, the bridge crossing ends the route with a panoramic view of northern Lake Michigan, the forests of both peninsulas in fall color, and the islands. Walk the bridge if the wind is manageable (pedestrian access weekends, call Mackinac Bridge Authority).

Fall Color in the Eastern UP: The Real Guide
The Upper Peninsula turns faster and harder than most people expect. Peak color in the UP typically runs 2-3 weeks ahead of lower Michigan — early to mid-October at the core, with the Keweenaw Peninsula going first (late September) and the southeastern UP holding color into the third week of October.
Color Windows by Subregion
- Keweenaw Peninsula and Baraga County: September 25 – October 8. Sugar maples, birch, and aspen on ridgelines above 1,400 feet go first.
- Marquette County and Iron Range: October 1–12. The Hogback Mountain Road on US-41 south of Marquette is one of the better color drives in the state.
- Tahquamenon Watershed (Chippewa + Luce Counties): October 5–18. The beech-maple mix along the Tahquamenon River corridor is exceptional, particularly on the lower reaches toward Paradise.
- Mackinac County and Les Cheneaux: October 10–22. Latest color in the UP due to Lake Michigan's moderating effect. The cut islands of Les Cheneaux in full color from the water is genuinely one of the better fall sights in the Midwest.
Scenic Overlooks on This Route
Tahquamenon River Corridor: The North Country Trail follows the river through the sugar maple stands between the Upper and Lower Falls. Late afternoon light on the amber water and orange canopy is the definitive eastern UP fall shot.
Newberry to Paradise Road (M-123): 30-mile stretch through Luce County with almost no development and consistent beech-maple color through mid-October.
Brevoort Lake: US-2 skirts the north shore of Brevoort Lake east of St. Ignace — aspen and birch against the still lake surface in morning light.
Mackinac Bridge: If you're leaving the UP via I-75, the bridge from the south tower gives the last panoramic view — the northern lake in cold blue, the forests on both sides turning in sequence.
Lodging Notes
Peak fall color weekends (the second and third weekends of October) are the most competitive lodging weeks of the UP season, including summer. Every motel from St. Ignace to Newberry to Munising books out. If you don't have a campsite reservation, you're improvising. Book the same day in late August or earlier. Michigan DNR reservations open 6 months in advance for state park sites.
