About Houghton
Houghton is where you board the Isle Royale Queen for the 73-mile crossing to Isle Royale National Park. That alone earns it a spot on this list. Michigan Technological University keeps the city alive year-round — the campus sits right above the Portage Waterway, and the lift bridge connecting Houghton to Hancock is one of the most photographed in the Midwest. The Keweenaw National Historical Park visitor center is here. In winter Houghton averages 200+ inches of snow and is the snowiest city in the eastern US east of the Rockies. The Keweenaw unfolds north from here: 50 miles of peninsula, copper country ruins, agate beaches, and Copper Harbor at the tip.
