The UP's biggest city on Lake Superior's south shore

Best: Summer, Fall

About Marquette

Marquette is the largest city in the Upper Peninsula and the unofficial capital of the UP. It punches well above its weight for a city of 20,000: a real downtown with independent restaurants and bars, Front Street running along Lake Superior, Presque Isle Park with a one-way loop road through old-growth pines, Black Rocks for cliff jumping in summer, and Sugarloaf Mountain for a panoramic hike that's genuinely hard enough to earn the view. The harbor is active — ore freighters dock here — and the city has a full-service hospital, Michigan Tech alumni energy, and a year-round population that actually lives here. Come in fall when the maples turn and the lake turns gray and the crowds thin out.
