Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1
📍

Paradise

Start point. Fill up on fuel and food — services thin out once you head into the national lakeshore corridor. Tahquamenon Falls State Park is 12 miles south on M-123.

🥾

Tahquamenon Falls State Park

🚗 ~0.3hr drive from previous stop

Upper Falls first: 200-foot wide, 50-foot drop, amber-colored cascade. In October the maple red overhang on the east bank reflects into the amber water. 3–4 hours for the full Upper + Lower Falls loop. Rowboat rental at Lower Falls (closes Oct 1).

Overnight Stop

State park campground books out weeks ahead in October. Hipcamp has private alternatives near Paradise. Campspot also has inventory in the corridor.

🏕

Grand Marais

🚗 ~1.3hr drive from previous stop

Sable Falls and Sable Dunes are a 10-minute walk from the national lakeshore parking area. The narrow gorge above Sable Falls has exceptional fall color. Woodland Park Campground (national lakeshore, first-come) is the overnight stop.

Overnight Stop

Woodland Park is free, first-come. Hipcamp has private sites east of Grand Marais as overflow. Book early on October weekends.

Day 2
🥾

Chapel Falls & Chapel Rock

🚗 ~0.5hr drive from previous stop

10 miles west on H-58, then 5 miles on Chapel Road to the trailhead. Chapel Falls is a 3-mile out-and-back. Chapel Loop (10 miles) adds Chapel Rock and Chapel Beach — the Lake Superior view from Chapel Rock during fall color is the best in the national lakeshore.

📸

Miners Beach & Miners Castle

🚗 ~1.5hr drive from previous stop

Miners Beach: the best drive-to beach in the national lakeshore. In October, the colored sandstone bluffs behind the beach reflect off Lake Superior — it's the defining image of the eastern UP fall. Miners Castle overlook is 0.5 miles further on.

📍

Munising

🚗 ~0.3hr drive from previous stop

Base for the Pictured Rocks boat cruise (book in advance, runs through Columbus Day). Munising Falls (M-28 east side) is a 5-minute walk and shows the full sandstone cliff in miniature. Eh! Burger and Dogpatch for meals.

Overnight Stop

Hipcamp and Campspot both have strong Munising-area inventory. Book ahead — October weekends are popular for the boat cruise + fall color combination.

Route Highlights

The Eastern UP Fall Color Corridor: Tahquamenon to Pictured Rocks

The two most dramatic landscapes in Michigan's Upper Peninsula — the amber cascade of Tahquamenon Falls and the 200-foot sandstone cliffs of Pictured Rocks — share a fall color season that runs October 3–15. This 2-day route connects them through the M-28 corridor, which is quietly one of the best fall color drives in the Midwest.

Day 1: Paradise → Tahquamenon Falls → Grand Marais

Paradise, Michigan is a real town and it earns its name in October. Start there before heading south on M-123 to the Upper Tahquamenon Falls. The Upper Falls drops 50 feet over a 200-foot cascade — the tannic acid from the cedar and spruce headwaters turns the water amber, and when maple red reflects off that amber water in October, it's one of the most photographically insane natural scenes in the Midwest. Budget 3–4 hours for the full Upper and Lower Falls loop. The Lower Falls rowboat experience (rent a rowboat at the concession and paddle the island) is available through October 1 — try to be there before it closes for the season.

Drive west on M-123 and M-28 toward Grand Marais — a 60-mile stretch that passes through the Seney National Wildlife Refuge corridor. Grand Marais is a small town at the eastern end of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The Sable Dunes and Sable Falls are a 10-minute walk from the parking area — the fall color in the narrow gorge above Sable Falls is exceptional. Overnight in Grand Marais: the Woodland Park Campground inside the national lakeshore is the right call, or Hipcamp private sites east of town.

Day 2: Grand Marais → Munising → Pictured Rocks Overlooks

The H-58 road (the main road through the national lakeshore west of Grand Marais) is paved but narrow — slow down and you'll catch several pull-off overlooks above the Lake Superior shoreline with fall color on the bluffs. Chapel Falls and Chapel Rock are 10 miles in on a dirt road — the parking area is at the end of Chapel Road. The Chapel Loop trail (10 miles round trip) connects Chapel Falls, Chapel Rock, and Chapel Beach, with lake views at the Rock that are as good as anything you'll see from the boat cruise. If you're not hiking 10 miles, Chapel Falls alone is a 3-mile out-and-back and worth every step during peak color season.

Arrive in Munising in the afternoon. Miners Beach (3 miles west of Munising on H-58) is the best drive-to beach in the national lakeshore — in October, the colored bluffs reflecting off the calm Lake Superior water from the beach is the defining image of the eastern UP. Miners Castle overlook is 0.5 miles further and shows the full scale of the sandstone architecture. The Pictured Rocks boat cruise (Munising dock, 2-hour trip) shows the full cliff face from the water — book in advance even in October, as the fall foliage backdrop makes this one of the most popular tour windows.

Practical Notes

What to Eat

Tahquamenon Falls Brewery (at the state park) does UP pasties and craft beer with a view of the river. Munising's Eh! Burger is the standard lunch stop — the UP burger with pasty gravy is exactly what it sounds like. Dogpatch Restaurant in Munising for dinner (walleye perch, locally sourced, open until October 31).
