Peak Timing by Region
The UP turns from north to south and from inland to shore. Keweenaw peaks first β sometimes 10 days ahead of the eastern UP. Use this table as your baseline; check the live status strip below for real-time updates.
| Region | Peak Window | Best Spots | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keweenaw Peninsula | Sep 20 β Oct 5 | Brockway Mountain Drive, Copper Harbor, Eagle Harbor | Earliest peak in Michigan. Birch and aspen at 1,000+ ft elevation. Check Brockway Mountain overlook first. |
| Marquette & Iron Range | Sep 28 β Oct 10 | Presque Isle Park, County Road 550 north, Negaunee ridge | Mixed hardwood. Presque Isle rocky shoreline + maples = best photo in the UP during peak. |
| Pictured Rocks Corridor | Oct 1 β Oct 12 | Miners Beach, Chapel Falls trail, Grand Sable Dunes | Sandstone cliffs + red maple = perfect contrast. Chapel Loop trail is the call. |
| Tahquamenon & Eastern UP | Oct 3 β Oct 15 | Tahquamenon Falls, Paradise, Whitefish Point | Tannic amber river + fall foliage = unmatched color combo. Later peak than the rest of the UP. |
| Hiawatha National Forest | Oct 1 β Oct 14 | AuTrain, Grand Marais, M-28 corridor | Mixed boreal/hardwood. M-28 from Munising to Newberry is one of the finest fall color drives in the Midwest. |

Why the UP for Fall Color?
The Forest Mix
Sugar maple, yellow birch, red maple, and aspen β the UP's northern hardwood forest runs the full color gamut from yellow to deep crimson. Overlaid with boreal spruce and fir that stay green, the contrast is sharper than anything in New England's monoculture maple zones.
The Water Factor
Three Great Lakes shorelines and 4,300 inland lakes mean fall color + water reflections every direction. The Keweenaw's Lake Superior shore during peak color is legitimately world-class photography territory.
Elevation Gradient
The Keweenaw's Brockway Mountain tops 1,000 feet β enough elevation for color to peak 10 days earlier than the shoreline. You can chase the front from high to low over a 2-week window without leaving the UP.
Low Crowds
Compared to Door County or the Smokies during peak color weekend, the UP is still relatively uncrowded. The infrastructure β campgrounds, roads, overlooks β can absorb peak-weekend traffic without the gridlock.
Planning Tips
- Book campgrounds in early September. Prime-location sites (Brockway Mountain area, Pictured Rocks) fill out by late September. DNR reservations open 6 months out. Hipcamp and Campspot have overflow private inventory.
- Weekdays beat weekends by 40β60%. If you can do TuesdayβThursday, Brockway Mountain Drive goes from parking lot chaos to solitude.
- Bring layers, not just a light jacket. UP temperatures in October swing 40Β°F between morning and afternoon. Nights can drop to 28Β°F at Copper Harbor elevation.
- The M-28 corridor is underrated. The stretch from Munising to Newberry hits peak color Oct 1β12 and is nearly free of tourist traffic compared to M-26 in the Keweenaw.
- Check road conditions before going off-piste. County forest roads that are fine in July can be soft in October after rainfall. 4WD or high-clearance recommended for off-highway routes.
